The suspended Chief Executive Officer of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Dr. (Med) Paa Kwesi Baidoo, has called on staff currently on strike in protest against his suspension to resume work and place the welfare of patients above all else.
In a letter addressed to hospital staff and issued by the Office of the Chief Executive on June 8, 2026, Dr. Baidoo thanked workers for the support they have shown him during the ongoing industrial action.
He described the staff’s actions as a demonstration of solidarity and expressed appreciation for their backing during what he termed a difficult period.
“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all staff of the hospital for your show of solidarity with me during this period. I am very grateful for your support,” he stated.
Despite acknowledging the support, Dr. Baidoo appealed to the workers to return to their posts to ensure uninterrupted healthcare delivery to patients.
“I need you all to return to duty in the supreme interest of Ghanaians and our valued patients, whilst I defer the outcome and directions to the supreme wisdom of the Hon. Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, and the Board of KATH,” he added.
The appeal comes as the strike continues to affect operations at the hospital, with reports indicating that some patients are facing challenges in accessing medical services.
Dr. Baidoo’s suspension followed a directive issued by the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, on June 5, 2026, instructing the Board of KATH to suspend him for two weeks with immediate effect.
According to the Ministry, the decision was taken after Dr. Baidoo announced a temporary suspension of emergency admissions at the hospital, a move the government said was inconsistent with directives issued by President John Dramani Mahama regarding the management of the situation at the facility.
The development has triggered concerns among healthcare stakeholders, as KATH remains one of Ghana’s major referral hospitals serving patients from across the country.
Efforts are expected to continue to resolve the impasse and restore normal operations at the hospital.
