A mining disaster at Asaman Tamfoe in the Atewa East District of the Eastern Region has claimed the lives of at least seven illegal miners, with four others still feared trapped underground.
The incident occurred at about 11 p.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2026, when a mining pit being worked by the group in search of gold suddenly collapsed, burying 11 miners beneath the debris.
Two other miners who were outside the pit when it caved in reportedly rushed into the community to raise the alarm.
Their distress call prompted residents to mobilise and begin rescue efforts, while the Police and other emergency agencies were notified.
Rescue teams worked throughout the night and managed to retrieve the remains of seven miners from the collapsed pit.
Five of the deceased have reportedly been identified as residents of Moseaso, while two others are believed to have hailed from Asaman Tamfoe.
However, four miners remain trapped underground as rescue personnel intensify efforts to reach them.
Personnel from the Anyinam District Police Command, the Ghana National Ambulance Service, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and community volunteers are currently at the scene.
The teams are working to clear the debris and locate the remaining miners, with hopes of determining whether any of them can still be rescued.
Authorities are expected to provide further updates on the identities of the deceased and the ongoing rescue operation as work at the site continues.
