The government has brought home another 49 Ghanaians from South Africa as concerns over rising xenophobic sentiments and anti-migrant tensions continue to affect foreign nationals in the country.
The latest group arrived at the Accra International Airport on Friday, August 21, following an evacuation exercise aimed at assisting Ghanaian nationals who no longer feel safe remaining in parts of South Africa.
The return of the 49 citizens comes amid reports of growing tensions and attacks involving foreign nationals, prompting increased concern over the safety of Ghanaians living and working in affected areas.
The evacuation forms part of the government’s response to the situation, particularly for citizens who have expressed concerns about their security and opted to return to Ghana.
Authorities are also maintaining contact with Ghana’s diplomatic representatives and relevant South African authorities as they assess the situation and explore measures to protect Ghanaians who remain in the country.
Meanwhile, citizens in areas experiencing heightened tensions have been advised to exercise caution, remain alert and follow safety instructions issued by the authorities.
The government says efforts will continue to monitor developments and ensure the wellbeing of Ghanaian nationals amid the ongoing tensions.
