Six students of Okuapeman Senior High School (SHS) have sustained injuries following violent reprisal attacks involving students of Okuapeman SHS and Mount Sinai Senior High School in the Akuapem North Municipality of the Eastern Region.
The incident, which occurred around 2 a.m. on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, reportedly resulted in significant damage to property at both schools.
The Headmaster of Okuapeman SHS said four of the injured students had been treated and discharged, while two remained on admission.
The violence also caused extensive damage to school infrastructure. At Okuapeman SHS, the Visual Arts studio, a teachers’ office and seven classrooms were reportedly burnt.
Examination papers and certificates were also destroyed in the fire.
At Mount Sinai SHS, a storeroom and the boys’ washroom were among the facilities reportedly damaged by fire during the unrest.
The Eastern Regional Minister and Chairperson of the Eastern Regional Security Council (REGSEC), Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, said investigations had commenced to determine what triggered the violence and identify those responsible.
She warned that students found to have participated in the attacks would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
“We are building a nation, we are not destroying a nation. We are resetting and that includes resetting you. Investigations are going on, those who started throwing the stones will not be allowed to go scot-free,” she said.
The minister assured that the police would work to identify the perpetrators and ensure that they were prosecuted.
The Eastern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Owusu-Bempah, condemned the violence and expressed concern over reports that police officers deployed to the schools were also attacked.
“It doesn’t take one person to fight, it takes two or more. We are not happy with what has happened. You are here to study and avail yourself to be morally upright and so you need to comport yourselves,” he said.
He stressed that the Ghana Education Service (GES) would not protect students found culpable in the attacks.
The Eastern Regional Director of Education, Dr Ivy Asantewaa, also described the incident as unfortunate and urged students to resolve disagreements without resorting to violence.
Security agencies remain deployed in the area as investigations continue and authorities work to restore calm at the two schools.
