Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, has taken steps to challenge a defamation suit filed against him by Minority Leader and Effutu Member of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
According to a report by Accra-based TV3, lawyers for the GoldBod CEO have filed a motion asking the court to set aside the suit, arguing that the writ is “incurably defective and incompetent.”
The development marks the latest turn in the legal dispute between the two politicians, which stems from alleged defamatory statements concerning claims that Afenyo-Markin was an “extortionist.”
TV3 reported on September 3, 2026, that Gyamfi’s lawyers had filed the application seeking to have the Minority Leader’s defamation action struck out.
The move follows an earlier step by Gyamfi to formally accept service of the writ through his lawyers.
In a notice filed at the High Court, Gyamfi, through his solicitors, Ayine & Partners, authorised the law firm to receive the writ of summons and all accompanying court processes on his behalf.
The notice, dated August 26, 2026, was titled “Notice to Accept Service of Writ on Behalf of the 1st Defendant in Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin v. Samuel Adu Gyamfi and Anor.”
It was signed by Seth Nyaaba, solicitor for the first defendant, on behalf of Ayine & Partners.
The lawyers indicated that they had received express instructions and authority from Gyamfi to accept service of the writ and other originating processes relating to the case.
Afenyo-Markin had announced the legal action during parliamentary proceedings on August 24, 2026, stating that he had initiated separate suits against Gyamfi and the Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Eric Adjei.
The Minority Leader accused the two of making defamatory statements against him in connection with allegations that he was an “extortionist.”
He disclosed that one of the suits, numbered GT/1029/2026, was filed at the Accra High Court against Samuel Adu Gyamfi and Multimedia Group Limited.
The second case, numbered GR/ACH/CC/C5/02/2026, was filed at the Achimota Circuit Court against Eric Adjei and Peace FM.
The latest application by Gyamfi now places the legal validity of Afenyo-Markin’s case at the centre of the dispute, with the court expected to determine whether the defamation suit can proceed in its current form.
