Minority Leader and Effutu MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin and Gomoa Central MP Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, are set to begin a joint peace engagement in communities affected by the recent violence in Gomoa and Effutu.
The two lawmakers will on Saturday, September 5, visit the affected communities to meet residents and traditional authorities as part of efforts to ease tensions and find a lasting solution to the conflict.
The initiative follows deadly clashes in New Winneba on Tuesday, September 1, which reportedly claimed three lives and left 17 others injured.
Mr Afenyo-Markin, speaking during a Facebook Live session, said leaders from the affected communities had agreed to support efforts aimed at restoring calm.
He said the planned visit would provide an opportunity for the two MPs to listen to residents, identify the issues fuelling the tensions and work towards correcting them.
“We want to assure the public that the leaders of both communities have agreed to allow peace to prevail. We will visit both communities on Saturday to engage the people, address the issues and correct the wrongs,” he said.
A-Plus also expressed his commitment to the peace initiative, saying he and Mr Afenyo-Markin had agreed on a strategy designed to achieve lasting peace.
“My brother has spoken and together, we have adopted a strategy to ensure lasting peace,” he said, while commending the Effutu MP for his commitment to the process.
The engagement comes against the backdrop of a longstanding land dispute involving communities in the area.
The recent violence reportedly involved groups from New Winneba, Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze, heightening tensions between the affected communities.
In response to the clashes, the Ghana Police Service arrested seven people in connection with the violence.
The two lawmakers are expected to use their engagements with residents and traditional leaders to promote dialogue, encourage restraint and identify practical steps towards resolving the underlying dispute.
The initiative is also expected to complement ongoing efforts by authorities and community leaders to prevent further violence and restore lasting peace in the affected areas.
