The stalled National Cathedral project has been attributed to a lack of commitment from Christians by the Presiding Archbishop and General Overseer of Action Chapel International, Nicholas Duncan-Williams.
Archbishop Duncan-Williams, who previously served on the Board of Trustees of the project, rejected the suggestion that corruption was the main reason the cathedral remains unfinished.
According to him, the project suffered because Christians failed to provide the level of support and commitment needed to bring it to completion.
“The National Cathedral was not built, not because of corruption. I was right there. It was because we Christians are not serious,” he said.
The Archbishop made the comments during a sermon to his congregation in a video shared on social media.
He questioned whether Christians were sufficiently committed to projects intended to advance the church and create a lasting legacy for future generations.
Rather than concentrating primarily on personal wealth and immediate family needs, he urged Christians to consider their responsibilities to the wider church and the future of the Christian community.
“We are a bunch of selfish, greedy people. It’s all about us. We don’t think about the kingdom,” he stated.
Archbishop Duncan-Williams also challenged Christians to examine their own contributions to the church before criticising others.
He argued that believers should be willing to support the work of God and assist people facing financial difficulties, including single mothers, widows and families struggling with school fees and rent.
According to him, some Christians accumulate considerable wealth for themselves and their families but make little provision for the church or charitable causes, including through their wills.
His comments come amid continued uncertainty surrounding the future of the National Cathedral project, a major interdenominational Christian initiative proposed by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
The planned cathedral is located in Accra and was conceived as a national Christian landmark and worship centre.
Archbishop Duncan-Williams’ remarks have consequently placed renewed attention on the role of the Christian community in financing and supporting large-scale church projects, as well as the broader responsibility of believers to contribute to causes they consider beneficial to society and future generations.
