Tension has gripped Pusiga in the Upper East Region following the alleged death of a lecturer of Gbewaa College of Education after an encounter with military personnel deployed to the Bawku area.
Residents took to the streets on Saturday, September 12, 2026, blocking roads and burning tyres in protest against the death of Issaka Abdulai, a lecturer in the Science Department of Gbewaa College of Education.
Management of the college, in a statement issued on Saturday, confirmed that Mr Abdulai had died following an alleged assault by military personnel on the night of Friday, September 11.
Although the college did not provide details about what led to the alleged assault, Citi News sources indicate that the lecturer was reportedly arrested while riding a motorbike during curfew hours.
His reported death quickly triggered anger among residents, who mounted protests in parts of Pusiga on Saturday morning.
The protesters blocked some roads and set tyres ablaze, expressing their frustration over what they described as the conduct of security personnel in the community.
The incident has further heightened concerns over relations between civilians and security personnel operating in the Bawku area, where security operations and restrictions have affected residents in recent times.
