Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has assured Senior High School (SHS) students across the country that the government has made adequate provisions to ensure they are fed without interruption during the 2026/2027 academic year.
He also disclosed that President John Dramani Mahama has directed a review of the SHS menu to improve the quality and nutritional value of meals served to students.
According to the Minister, the revised menu will include eggs and chicken as part of efforts to enhance the nutritional content of meals provided under the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme.
Mr Iddrisu made the announcement on Friday, September 18, 2026, when he visited Asankragwa Senior High School and Asankragwa Senior High Technical School in the Western Region to monitor the reopening of schools.
“I will follow further to examine the data, and then we’ll ensure that you don’t lack food. We make adequate provision for your meals. I’m happy to announce that President John Dramani Mahama has directed that we review your menu to make it better,” he said.
“We’re introducing eggs and chicken as part of your menu,” he added.
The Minister’s visit forms part of a nationwide exercise to assess the reopening of rural and Category C schools, inspect facilities and engage school authorities and students on challenges affecting teaching, learning and student welfare.
The government has allocated GH¢4.2 billion for feeding under the Free SHS programme in the 2026 fiscal year, out of a total allocation of GH¢9.6 billion for the programme.
The government says the increased focus on feeding is part of broader measures to improve the implementation of Free SHS and ensure students have access to adequate and nutritious meals while pursuing their education.
The Education Ministry is also using the school visits to identify infrastructure and other logistical challenges requiring attention as the government works to improve conditions in schools across the country.
