Manhyia South Member of Parliament (MP) and lawyer, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has levelled allegations of extortion against the Executive Director of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), Raymond Archer, following the agency’s attempt to arrest him at the Accra High Court.
The MP alleged that Raymond Archer extorted money from individuals to suppress stories during his time as a journalist under the administration of former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
Speaking on Asempa FM on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, Baffour Awuah claimed he had evidence to support the allegation, insisting that he was not afraid to raise the issue publicly.
“Even you people that extorted monies during President Kufuor’s time, we remember. Today, you, Raymond Archer, you are at EOCO. I remember the extortion you did during President Kufuor’s era to kill stories. For me, I am not afraid of anything and those are facts. At the time, Alhaji Bamba was at the Office of the President and those are facts,” he said.
His comments come after EOCO officers attempted to take him into custody at the Accra High Court on Wednesday.
EOCO has said the attempted arrest followed the MP’s failure to honour invitations from the agency on two occasions to assist with an ongoing investigation dating back to February 2026.
The development has sparked debate over the manner in which EOCO sought to arrest the sitting MP, with critics questioning whether the appropriate constitutional and parliamentary procedures were followed.
Some have argued that, given Baffour Awuah’s status as a sitting Member of Parliament, EOCO should have engaged the Speaker of Parliament to facilitate his appearance before the agency rather than attempting to arrest him at the court.
The controversy has therefore shifted attention from the underlying investigation to the conduct of the arrest attempt and the allegations now being made by the MP against the EOCO Executive Director.
