BoG Governor touts Ghana’s digital finance gains to Queen Máxima

Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor, Dr Johnson Asiama, says Ghana has positioned itself as one of Africa’s leading digital finance markets, following significant growth in mobile money services, interoperable payment systems and financial technology innovation.

He attributed the country’s progress to sustained investment in digital infrastructure and a supportive regulatory framework, which have helped expand access to financial services for millions of Ghanaians.

Dr Asiama made the remarks at a Financial Health Leadership Roundtable in Accra during the visit of the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Financial Health, Queen Máxima of the Netherlands.

He noted that Ghana’s financial sector had undergone considerable transformation over the past decade, with digital innovation playing a key role in making financial services more accessible.

“Through innovation, collaboration and investment in digital infrastructure, financial services have become more accessible to millions of Ghanaians,” he said.

However, the BoG Governor stressed that the next phase of the country’s financial inclusion agenda should focus on ensuring that increased access to financial services translates into improved financial well-being for households and businesses.

He explained that financial health goes beyond access to banking and digital payment platforms, requiring people to have opportunities to save, obtain insurance, invest, secure pensions and improve their financial literacy.

Dr Asiama identified productive and responsible credit as one of the important pathways to strengthening financial health.

“Credit, when appropriately designed and delivered, enables households to invest in their futures and gives businesses the capital required to grow, innovate and create jobs,” he said.

His remarks highlight the need for Ghana to move beyond expanding access to digital financial services towards ensuring that financial inclusion delivers meaningful improvements in people’s living standards, strengthens businesses and supports sustainable economic growth.
