The Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku, together with some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has appeared at the Accra High Court to express support for the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
The NPP members were at the court on Monday, July 27, 2026, as proceedings continued in the GH¢14.3 million Ghana Export-Import (EXIM) Bank case involving Wontumi and other accused persons.
Chairman Wontumi is facing allegations relating to the acquisition and use of funds from an EXIM Bank loan facility, which is currently before the court.
His appearance at the hearing follows his recent conviction in a separate illegal mining case involving activities linked to Akonta Mining Limited at Samreboi in the Western Region.
The Accra High Court found him guilty of illegal mining-related offences and sentenced him to 20 years’ imprisonment with hard labour. The court also imposed a fine of 10,000 penalty units, equivalent to GH¢120,000.
Failure to pay the fine would result in an additional three-year prison term, according to the court’s ruling.
Wontumi is currently serving the sentence while pursuing legal avenues to challenge the conviction.
