The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has destooled Nana Kwabena Nsia Ababio, the Paramount Chief of Kenyase II, bringing to an end his remarkable 89-year reign as one of the longest-serving traditional rulers in Asanteman.
The decision was announced during a meeting of the Asanteman Traditional Council on Monday, July 27, 2026.
Nana Kwabena Nsia Ababio, who was enstooled in 1937, had been recognised as the longest-reigning Paramount Chief in Asanteman. His tenure spanned nearly nine decades, during which he witnessed and presided over significant cultural, social, and political changes within the Asante Kingdom.
According to proceedings of the Traditional Council, the chief was removed from office after being found to have breached Asante customs and traditions.
The disciplinary action also affected nearly all of his kingmakers, who were destooled for violating the oath they swore upon assuming their respective roles.
However, the Asantehene exercised clemency in some instances. The Kontihene was spared the sanction, while the destooled Akyeame and other linguists serving on the traditional council were reinstated.
The development underscores the Asantehene’s constitutional role within the traditional authority structure as the custodian of Asante customs and traditions, with the responsibility of ensuring discipline, accountability, and adherence to the customs governing the chieftaincy institution.
