The Ghana Police Service has released further details on the attempted robbery in Labone, Accra, which resulted in two suspected robbers being shot dead during a confrontation with police officers.
In a statement shared on X on Thursday, August 13, 2026, the Police said officers arrested one suspect following the operation, while another suspect managed to escape.
The incident occurred at about 10:45 a.m. in the vicinity of GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank in Labone.
According to the Police, officers arrived at the scene and arrested a Nigerian national identified as Augustine Okechukwu Maazi, who remains in custody and is assisting with investigations.
The Police said one of the vehicles used by the suspects sped away after its occupants spotted the officers. A police team pursued the vehicle and apprehended Maazi, although the other occupant escaped.
The occupants of a second vehicle also attempted to flee while firing at the police, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
The confrontation resulted in the deaths of two suspected robbers. Their bodies have since been deposited at the morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy.
The Police also recovered two vehicles believed to have been used during the attempted robbery.
They were a Toyota Highlander with registration number GS-1434-18 and a Hyundai Tucson bearing registration number GS-7915-17.
A blow pistol was also recovered at the scene as part of the items secured by the Police.
The Police Service said investigations are ongoing, with the arrested suspect remaining in custody to assist authorities in establishing the full circumstances surrounding the attempted robbery.
