Construction of the long-awaited Accra-Kumasi Expressway is expected to officially commence in January 2027, following the completion of the right-of-way clearance for the major road project.
Chief Executive Officer of Accra-Kumasi Expressway Limited, Francis Ahlidza, disclosed that the Ghana Armed Forces has completed the clearance and definition of the alignment for the proposed expressway, paving the way for the next stage of the project.
Speaking on Joy News’ The Pulse on Monday, September 14, 2026, Mr Ahlidza said President John Dramani Mahama is expected to cut the sod for the project before Christmas, ahead of the commencement of construction early next year.
“We expect it to begin by January of 2027,” he said.
According to him, the Ghana Armed Forces was directed by the Ministry of Roads and Highways and President Mahama to deploy personnel, engineers and equipment to clear the right of way and establish the alignment of the proposed expressway.
Mr Ahlidza described the handing-over ceremony following the completion of the exercise as a major milestone, noting that it signals the transition of the project into its procurement phase.
“Today’s handing over ceremony marks a very key milestone in this project. It means that the Ghana Armed Forces have managed to clear the right of way, that is the alignment of the proposed expressway,” he said.
He explained that the designs for the project have already been completed, allowing the authorities to begin the process of selecting contractors capable of executing the massive infrastructure project.
He said construction companies from Ghana and across the world with the requisite technical and financial capacity are being invited to express interest in undertaking the project.
The interested firms will subsequently undergo a prequalification assessment, after which companies that meet the required standards will be invited to submit their tenders.
Mr Ahlidza said the prequalification process is necessary to ensure that only companies with the expertise and capacity to manage the complexity and scale of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway advance to the final tender stage.
The project is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Accra and Kumasi, while reducing travel time and easing pressure on the existing Accra-Kumasi highway once completed.
