A 52-year-old anti-illegal mining campaigner and spiritualist has been found dead in a suspected suicide incident at Assin Amoabeng, a community near Nyankumase Ahenkuro in the Assin South District of the Central Region.
The deceased, identified as Baba Ibrahim, popularly known as Alhaji Nagode, was discovered hanging by a rope at his residence on Monday morning, September 7, 2026.
His 14-year-old daughter, who reportedly discovered the body, said the incident occurred at about 6:40 a.m.
According to the teenager, her father had earlier asked her to take her younger sibling to school and return home for money to buy food.
She said she returned about 30 minutes later and found her father hanging by a rope around his neck.
She raised an alarm, prompting residents to rush to the scene and assist.
Alhaji Nagode was known in the community as a spiritualist and farmer and had also been actively involved in campaigns against illegal mining, which he believed posed a threat to the environment.
Questions surrounding his death have emerged, particularly because he was reportedly involved in a court case with another resident of the community.
His daughter said the case was scheduled to be heard on Monday, the same day his body was discovered.
However, it remains unclear whether the court case had any connection to his death, and no official explanation has yet been given for the incident.
Alhaji Nagode, who was a father of seven, was reportedly no longer living with his wife. His youngest child is said to be five years old.
The Assembly Member for the area, Ekow Sadique Aidoo, confirmed the death and said the incident had been reported to the police.
The circumstances surrounding the death are expected to be investigated by the police.
