NPP Flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has reportedly backed the Minority Caucus in Parliament’s push for greater scrutiny of the alleged US$1.7 billion loss linked to the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme involving the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) and the Bank of Ghana (BoG).
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin disclosed this after meeting Dr Bawumia at his private residence in Accra on Monday, August 24, ahead of Parliament’s emergency sitting.
According to Mr Afenyo-Markin, the meeting focused on developments within the New Patriotic Party and the issues the Minority intends to raise when Parliament resumes.
“I held a meeting this morning with the Flag-Bearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, at his private residence in Accra,” he said.
He said Dr Bawumia reaffirmed his confidence in his leadership and encouraged the Minority to remain focused on the alleged financial loss.
“Dr Bawumia expressed his full confidence in my leadership of the Minority,” Mr Afenyo-Markin stated.
Bawumia urges Minority to stay focused
The Minority Leader said Dr Bawumia advised the Caucus not to allow other issues to distract it from demanding answers over the reported loss.
According to him, the NPP Flagbearer described the alleged US$1.7 billion loss as equivalent to about 1.5% of Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and referenced an August 2026 report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
“He urged me to remain focused on the loss of over $1.7 billion, equivalent to 1.5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), arising from the operations of GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme,” he said.
Mr Afenyo-Markin further claimed that Dr Bawumia cautioned the Minority against attempts to divert public attention from the matter.
“He cautioned me against being distracted by attempts to divert public attention from it,” he added.
The former Vice President also encouraged the Minority to use parliamentary procedures to pursue accountability, according to Mr Afenyo-Markin.
“He called on the Minority, under my leadership, to do everything within the rules of the House to ensure the Mahama government is held fully accountable to the people of Ghana for this loss,” he said.
Minority vows to pursue matter
Mr Afenyo-Markin said Dr Bawumia also commended the Minority for its efforts in pursuing the issue.
He assured the NPP Flagbearer that the Caucus would continue to raise the matter in Parliament, describing the pursuit of accountability as a national responsibility.
“I assured him that this is a national task the Minority intends to prosecute to the fullest extent of our ability, with the very best of intentions, and minded always by the interests of the Ghanaian people,” he stated.
The Minority Leader said the alleged loss would remain a key issue on the Caucus’ agenda as Parliament resumes its emergency sitting.
“I further informed him that this colossal loss, under the watch of GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana, is firmly on the Minority’s agenda as Parliament reconvenes today,” he said.
He pledged that the Minority would continue demanding explanations over the reported figure until it believes the concerns raised by the Caucus have been adequately addressed.
“We remain resolute in this commitment, and we will not relent until the Ghanaian people receive the answers they deserve,” Mr Afenyo-Markin added.
