Two men have been remanded by an Accra Circuit Court after they were accused of diverting 54,000 litres of petrol valued at GH¢980,000 and allegedly setting the tanker carrying the fuel on fire.
The accused persons, Alhassan Amidu, a driver, and Francis Owusu, a driver’s mate, are facing charges of conspiracy to steal and cause damage, as well as separate counts of stealing and causing damage.
Both men have denied the charges.
The case centres on a fuel tanker belonging to JK Narh Transport, a company owned by the complainant, Emmanuel Narh, and involved in the transportation of petroleum products.
According to the prosecution, Amidu and Owusu were assigned to transport 54,000 litres of petrol from Tema to Buipe in the Savannah Region.
However, the prosecution alleged that the two men diverted the consignment during the journey and attempted to sell the fuel.
The court was told that the accused allegedly later set the tanker ablaze along the Kawakpe-Gurupe stretch of the road, allegedly intending to make the incident appear to have been caused by an accident.
The prosecution said the two subsequently informed the complainant that the tanker had been destroyed in an accident.
Their account reportedly raised suspicions, leading the complainant to report the matter to the police. The two were subsequently arrested.
During investigations, the prosecution told the court that the accused allegedly admitted in their caution statements to drilling into the tanker’s compartment seal to gain access to the fuel.
The prosecution maintains that the alleged actions resulted in the loss of the fuel and damage to the tanker.
The matter remains under investigation, and the accused persons are expected to return to court on August 31, 2026.
