The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has arrested five individuals suspected of engaging in human trafficking and cyber-related criminal activities following an intelligence-driven operation at Kwabenya in Accra.
The operation, which took place on July 12, 2026, involved personnel from the CID Headquarters Operations Unit, the Cybercrime Unit, and the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, July 21, 2026, the Director-General of the CID, Commissioner of Police Lydia Yaako Donkor, said the arrests were part of four separate operations aimed at tackling cybercrime, human trafficking, and illegal firearms-related offences.
The suspects have been named as Chigozi Azubuike, 35; Edwin Onyema, 24; Kingsley Nwanchukwu, 29; Henry Ebuke, 32; and Harrison Godwin, 26.
According to the Police, the operation resulted in the seizure of 52 mobile phones and several wireless internet devices believed to have been used in cybercrime activities.
The CID said intelligence received on July 11 suggested that some young Nigerian nationals had allegedly been trafficked into Ghana and confined in an apartment at Kwabenya, where they were reportedly compelled to engage in online criminal activities.
Based on the information gathered, officers conducted a search of a three-bedroom apartment at the location. During the exercise, the team became suspicious of a locked room within the house.
Police said Azubuike claimed the room belonged to his elder brother, who was not present at the time. However, officers found the explanation questionable and proceeded to gain access to the room.
Preliminary investigations revealed that 18 Nigerian nationals between the ages of 15 and 24 had allegedly been brought into Ghana through trafficking arrangements.
Investigators also accused Azubuike of directing the victims to present themselves as a single group and provide misleading information to the Police if questioned.
The rescued victims have since been placed in a secure facility, where they are receiving the necessary assistance and support from relevant authorities.
The five suspects were put before Circuit Court 7 on July 16, 2026, and have been remanded into Police custody to allow further investigations into the matter.
