‘I didn’t campaign for NDC to do this’ – Kpebu criticises EOCO

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has warned that the conduct of some state officials could undermine public confidence in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government ahead of the 2028 general elections.

According to him, the ongoing controversy surrounding the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah should be treated with seriousness, particularly because of its potential impact on the government’s credibility.

Speaking on Accra-based Channel One TV, Mr Kpebu expressed disappointment with what he described as the misuse of legal and state powers by some government appointees.

He said his concerns were particularly strong because he had actively campaigned for the NDC ahead of the 2024 elections and supported its return to power despite the challenges he said party supporters faced under the previous administration.

“It is a shame, I didn’t campaign for the NDC to come and do this nonsense,” he said.

Mr Kpebu questioned why officials of a government that came into office on promises of improved governance would engage in actions he considers an abuse of state authority.

“Then you (NDC) come, this is how you are misusing the power?” he lamented.

He said the controversy should not be viewed only as an isolated dispute involving EOCO but as an issue that could influence how citizens assess the government’s commitment to the rule of law and responsible use of state institutions.

Mr Kpebu further cautioned that if concerns surrounding the conduct of state agencies are not addressed, the NDC could face political consequences in 2028.

He urged the government to pay attention to growing concerns about the exercise of state authority, warning that public dissatisfaction could eventually translate into electoral consequences for the governing party.
