The Marine Police at Ada have intercepted an abandoned canoe containing 2,213 slabs of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp on the River Volta near Tuanikopey Island.
The operation was carried out by the Marine Police Detachment at about 12:45 a.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2026, during a routine patrol.
The Tema Regional Police Command said the occupants of the outboard-powered wooden canoe fled after spotting the patrol team, leaving the vessel and its contents behind.
A search of the canoe led to the discovery of 29 sacks containing 2,213 slabs of dried leaves wrapped in yellow cellotape.
Police also found 14 25-litre gallons, 12 of which contained pre-mixed fuel, as well as two Yamaha outboard motors with capacities of 40HP and 30HP.
In a statement signed by the Command’s Head of Public Affairs, ASP Dede Dzakpasu, the suspected narcotic substances have been conveyed to the Ada District Police Headquarters for further investigation.
The Police said arrangements were underway to transport the outboard motors and pre-mixed fuel to the station.
Investigators are now working to establish the identities of the individuals who abandoned the canoe and track them down.
The Tema Regional Police Command has meanwhile cautioned the public against engaging in the trafficking and transportation of narcotic substances.
It has also appealed to anyone with information about the owners or occupants of the canoe to report to the nearest police station.
According to the Command, information from the public could assist investigators in identifying those behind the consignment and bringing the investigation to a conclusion.
