Nigerian national Augustine Ogechukwu Maazi has pleaded not guilty to eight charges in connection with an alleged robbery syndicate accused of planning to attack banks in the Labone area of Accra.
Maazi appeared before the Accra Circuit Court, where his lawyer’s application for bail was rejected. The court subsequently ordered that he be remanded into police custody.
Prosecutors allege that Maazi was a member of a robbery syndicate that was preparing to target GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank, all located within the Labone enclave.
The alleged operation was reportedly foiled by the police before the suspects could carry out the planned attacks.
Maazi is facing eight charges, including conspiracy to commit robbery. The prosecution is also linking him to other alleged robbery incidents recorded over the years, including attacks involving banks.
Following the proceedings, Maazi was escorted from the Accra Circuit Court by police officers after the court declined his bail request.
The case has been adjourned to September 2, 2026, for further proceedings.
Police are also pursuing efforts to arrest two other alleged members of the syndicate who are currently at large.
