The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused the John Mahama-led administration of deliberately targeting its members through recent arrests in an attempt to intimidate the opposition and weaken its activities.
The allegation was made in a statement issued on Thursday, July 23, 2026, and signed by the party’s Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah.
According to the NPP, the growing number of arrests involving its members points to a deliberate pattern rather than isolated occurrences.
“The arrests of opposition members by the John Mahama Administration are becoming far too frequent. This does not appear to be a coincidence but rather part of a broader effort to harass and weaken opposition to the government. A clear pattern has emerged,” the party stated.
The opposition party appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to intervene and discourage what it described as the harassment of its members.
It also called on its supporters to remain calm, maintain discipline and focus their attention on issues affecting the lives of ordinary Ghanaians.
The NPP further alleged that the government is using the arrests as a means of diverting public attention from what it described as its poor performance in office.
“We are dealing with a government that appears eager to seize on the slightest opportunity to divert public attention from its abysmal performance thus far,” the statement said.
The party argued that government’s priority should instead be addressing concerns such as the rising cost of living, unemployment among young people, issues surrounding judicial independence, governance challenges and the fulfilment of its campaign promises.
According to the NPP, these matters remain the key concerns of citizens and should form the basis of national discussions.
The party also advised its members to avoid making inflammatory comments or engaging in personal attacks, warning that such actions could distract from its efforts to hold the government accountable.
Instead, it urged party supporters to rely on facts, evidence and constructive advocacy in their engagements.
“Facts, evidence, and disciplined advocacy remain our strongest weapons. Let us stay focused on holding the John Mahama Administration accountable and on speaking for the millions of Ghanaians who expect and deserve better performance from the government,” the statement added.
