The Ghana Police Service has arrested a self-styled pastor over allegations that he deceived several women through romance scams, fake marriage promises, blackmail and other fraudulent activities.
The suspect, identified as Nana Yaw Bonsu Kwarteng, is accused of luring women into relationships by falsely promising marriage before allegedly exploiting them financially and emotionally.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Police said preliminary investigations revealed that Kwarteng presented himself as a pastor who conducted church services on Instagram. He allegedly told women that God had revealed they were destined to become his wives, using the claim to gain their confidence.
According to the Police, Kwarteng strengthened the deception by visiting the families of some victims and presenting them with promise rings to make the relationships appear genuine.
Investigators further alleged that he obtained intimate photographs from some of the women and later used the images to extort money from them through threats.
The Police also said the suspect convinced some victims to invest in what he claimed was a car tyre import business. He allegedly collected thousands of dollars under the guise of shipping and clearing containers of tyres before cutting off communication with the victims.
Investigations also linked Kwarteng’s wife, Sally Akosua Amoasah, to the case. Police allege that she received intimate images of some victims from her husband and used them to intimidate and threaten the women.
So far, seven victims have officially lodged complaints with the Police, although investigators believe the alleged offences date back to 2021 and that more victims may still come forward.
Kwarteng and Amoasah have been arraigned before Accra Circuit Court One on charges including conspiracy to commit crime, defrauding by false pretences and the non-consensual sharing of intimate images.
The court remanded Kwarteng into Police custody, with his next appearance scheduled for August 6, while Amoasah was granted bail.
The Ghana Police Service said investigations are ongoing and appealed to anyone who may have fallen victim to similar acts involving the suspect to report to the nearest Police station to assist with the case.
