An alleged phone snatcher was rescued by the police after a failed robbery attempt triggered a violent mob attack near the A&C Mall at East Legon in Accra.
The incident occurred on the evening of Thursday, September 10, 2026, after the suspect and an accomplice reportedly attempted to snatch a phone from an individual while riding on a motorbike.
The attempted robbery was unsuccessful after the intended victim reportedly struck one of the suspects, causing him to fall from the motorbike.
The incident quickly drew the attention of passersby and residents in the area, some of whom reportedly surrounded the suspect and attempted to take matters into their own hands.
According to a report by Atinka News, some members of the crowd picked up various objects, including weapons, and moved towards the suspect with the apparent intention of attacking and lynching him.
The situation escalated as some members of the crowd reportedly assaulted the suspect, with voices heard from behind the camera shouting, “Beat him! Kill him!”
The situation was brought under control after police officers arrived at the scene and intervened before the crowd could inflict further harm on the suspect.
Although some members of the crowd reportedly managed to hit him before the police took control of the situation, officers eventually whisked the suspect away to the East Legon Police Station.
The suspect is expected to assist investigators with inquiries into the alleged robbery attempt, while police work to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify any other person who may have been involved.
The incident has once again raised concerns about mob justice, as the police intervention prevented the alleged robbery suspect from being subjected to potentially fatal violence before due process could take its course.
