An intelligence-led operation by the Ashaiman District Police has led to the seizure of 37 slabs of compressed dried plant material suspected to be Indian hemp.
A 49-year-old trader, Issaka Mohammed, was arrested in connection with the seizure during the operation carried out by the Tema Regional Police Command on Saturday, September 12, 2026.
According to the police, the operation followed intelligence received by Motorbike Patrol officers about a suspected Indian hemp dealer allegedly operating from a ghetto behind the New Tulaku Cow Market.
The officers proceeded to the location at about 11:30 p.m. and intercepted a sack reportedly in the possession of Mohammed.
A search of the sack allegedly uncovered 37 slabs of compressed dried plant material suspected to be Indian hemp.
The police said the seized items were counted in the presence of the suspect and have been retained as exhibits to support investigations.
Mohammed remains in police custody and is assisting investigators in establishing the circumstances surrounding the suspected narcotics.
The Tema Regional Police Command said the suspect is expected to be arraigned before court as soon as practicable.
The Command has meanwhile appealed to the public to continue providing credible information on persons suspected of possessing, selling or distributing Indian hemp and other illicit drugs to aid efforts to combat narcotics-related activities.
