The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has disclosed that President John Dramani Mahama has warned him he could be dismissed if the planned SIM card re-registration exercise subjects Ghanaians to unnecessary stress.
According to the Minister, the President issued the warning during a Cabinet meeting, reminding him of his previous criticism of the earlier SIM registration exercise and insisting that the new process must not expose subscribers to similar difficulties.
Speaking in an interview with Kwesi Parker Wilson on Oyerepa TV, Mr George said the government was preparing to begin the exercise after completing the procurement of the necessary digital platform.
“I have gone to Parliament to lay the law. The L.I. has matured and passed. Now we are going through the procurement of the platform, then we start the process,” he stated.
He assured Ghanaians that the new registration system would be designed to eliminate the need for subscribers to queue physically to complete the process.
Mr George explained that people with smartphones and the required identification card would be able to register from the comfort of their homes.
“The President at the Cabinet meeting warned me that if Ghanaians go and queue or go through stress for the SIM card re-registration, he would dismiss me. He told me I condemned and criticised the process then, so I cannot come and do the same. If that happened, he would sack me,” he said.
“Anyone with a smartphone and card can sit at their home and do the registration,” he added.
The assurance comes amid concerns among subscribers about the potential inconvenience associated with another nationwide SIM registration exercise.
