The Bono East Regional Police Command has arrested six suspects in connection with a highway robbery on the Portor-Gulumpe Highway and recovered the full GH¢300,000 allegedly taken from a businessman.
Police investigations indicate that the robbery was allegedly orchestrated by the victim’s driver, who is accused of leaking information about the money being transported to the other members of the gang.
The incident occurred on the evening of July 19, 2026, around 8:30 pm near the Portor Police Barrier within the Kintampo Police Division.
According to the Police, officers stationed at the barrier received intelligence about an ongoing robbery operation and quickly moved to the scene.
When they arrived, four suspects reportedly escaped into a nearby bush, but officers managed to arrest Abdul Sadat Ali, 24, who was driving a Toyota Voxy with registration number AS 1541-25.
During initial investigations, Abdul Sadat Ali allegedly identified another suspect, Samad Issahaka, 24, who was driving a Kia Rhino with registration number AS 7337-23. Police later arrested him.
Further investigations uncovered that the robbery was allegedly an inside operation involving the victim’s own driver.
Police said Yahaya Seidu, 35, the owner of the Kia Rhino, had hired Samad Issahaka to drive him to Buipe to purchase cattle. Unknown to him, the driver was allegedly aware that he was carrying a large amount of cash and allegedly planned the robbery with five others.
According to the Police, the suspects followed the Kia Rhino from Offinso in the Ashanti Region and attacked the occupants shortly after they passed the Portor Police Barrier.
The robbers allegedly made away with GH¢300,000 in cash during the operation, using a toy pistol.
Following the attack, personnel from the Police Counter-Terrorism Unit, together with the local patrol team, pursued the fleeing suspects into the bush and arrested the remaining four members of the group.
They have been identified as Abdul Rahman Mashud, 21; Asigri Avoka, 25; Awini Stephen, 19; and Faisal Salifu, 26.
A search conducted on the suspects led to the recovery of the entire GH¢300,000 allegedly stolen from the businessman.
During interrogation, the suspects reportedly admitted that they received information from Samad Issahaka, the victim’s driver, and had followed the vehicle from Offinso before carrying out the robbery.
All six suspects remain in Police custody and are assisting with ongoing investigations.
The Ghana Police Service commended the officers involved for their swift response and professionalism, particularly the personnel at the Portor Barrier and the Counter-Terrorism Unit for their role in apprehending the suspects.
Speaking to the media in Techiman, Bono East Regional Police Commander DCOP Shaibu Sadique-Osei assured residents that the Police would continue to work to protect lives and property in the region.
He urged the public to remain alert and report suspicious activities, especially when transporting large sums of money.
