Major teacher unions have suspended their planned industrial action following assurances from the government that salary adjustments for promoted teachers will be implemented in September.
The decision follows a meeting between the Ministry of Education, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) to address concerns over delays in placing promoted teachers on their appropriate salary scales.
Addressing a joint press conference, Deputy Minister of Education, Dr Clement Apaak, said the government had reached an agreement with the unions to resolve the matter.
He said the Ghana Education Service (GES) would urgently submit the required data to the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department to facilitate the placement of affected teachers on the correct salary scales.
According to him, the process is expected to pave the way for the affected teachers to receive their adjusted salaries in September.
Dr Apaak reaffirmed the government’s commitment to honouring the agreement reached with the unions and ensuring that the necessary processes are completed within the agreed timeframe.
However, the unions have warned that the suspension of the strike depends on the government delivering on its commitment.
PRETAG President, King Ali Awudu, called on the government to strictly adhere to the agreed timelines and respect established labour practices in implementing the salary adjustments.
He cautioned that failure to fulfil the commitment could deepen frustration among teachers and heighten concerns within the sector.
Mr Awudu said the unions would closely monitor the implementation process to ensure that the government fulfils its promise.
The planned industrial action has therefore been suspended for now, with the unions awaiting the implementation of the agreed salary adjustments in September.
