Teacher unions to decide next steps over unpaid promotion-related allowances

Teacher unions are set to meet today, Friday, September 25, to determine their next course of action following the government’s failure to pay outstanding allowances and salary upgrades owed to promoted teachers.

The meeting follows the expiration of a September 24 deadline set by the unions for government to honour its commitment to settle the payments.

The Education Minister had earlier pledged to address salary upgrades and promotion placements for nearly 80,000 teachers by September.

However, the unions say they have yet to receive the expected payments or any official response from government.

Speaking to Citi News, Communications Officer of the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PTAG), Kingsley Anyimadu, said the leadership of the three teacher unions would meet to assess the situation and determine the way forward.

The three unions are PTAG, formerly the Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Ghana (CCT-Ghana), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT).

“We have not received any response from the government. The leadership of these three teacher unions—that is, the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana, formerly CCT Ghana, NAGRAT, and GNAT—will be meeting early in the morning,” Mr Anyimadu said.

He added that the unions would communicate their position and any decisions reached at the meeting to their members and the public.

“Whatever information we have to give to our members and the good people of Ghana, we will communicate,” he said.

The meeting is expected to focus on the government’s failure to meet the September 24 deadline and the implications for teachers awaiting their promotion-related payments.
