Two people have reportedly been killed and seven others injured following a violent clash between youth from Effutu and Gomoa Pomadze, also known as New Winneba, in the Gomoa Central District of the Central Region.
The incident, which occurred this morning, reportedly followed a confrontation between some Gomoa youth and members of the Effutu community over the alleged sale of land at New Winneba by persons from Effutu.
The confrontation is said to have escalated into an exchange of gunfire, leaving two people dead and seven others with gunshot wounds.
The injured victims have reportedly been rushed to the Trauma Hospital for medical attention.
The dispute is linked to longstanding disagreements between the Effutu and Gomoa communities over ownership of portions of land in the area. While the Effutu people maintain that the area now known as New Winneba forms part of their traditional lands, the Gomoa community disputes the claim and insists that the land belongs to Gomoa.
Tensions reportedly heightened following the latest confrontation, with reports that some Gomoa youth were heading towards Winneba Township.
In response, some youth from Winneba are said to have gathered at Winneba Junction in an attempt to prevent the Gomoa youth from entering the township.
The development has raised concerns about a possible escalation of the conflict, with the police deployed to the area to restore calm and prevent further violence.
One person has reportedly been arrested in connection with the incident, although details surrounding the arrest remain unclear.
Authorities are expected to provide further information as investigations into the clash continue.
