The elder sister of incarcerated former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has died.
The deceased, Regina Wiafe Antwi, reportedly collapsed following her brother’s arrest and subsequent imprisonment, according to former NPP Ashanti Regional Communications Officer, Paul Yandoh.
Yandoh disclosed the development in an interview on Nhyira FM, saying Wednesday, September 30, 2026, marks the one-week observance of Regina Wiafe Antwi at Kuntenase in the Ashanti Region.
According to him, the woman became distressed over Wontumi’s incarceration and later collapsed.
“Due to the maltreatment and jailing of Wontumi, his sister collapsed and has eventually died. Tomorrow marks her one-week celebration,” he said.
Yandoh further claimed that Wontumi’s father had also been severely affected by his son’s imprisonment and had lost his appetite.
He said the father struggled to eat whenever food was served to him because of his distress over the situation.
Chairman Wontumi has been in custody at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison since his conviction in July in a case involving Akonta Mining Company Limited.
An Accra High Court sentenced him to 20 years in prison after finding him guilty of offences linked to mining activities on the company’s concession at Samreboi in the Western Region. The sentences on the two counts are to run concurrently.
Wontumi has appealed the conviction and sentence, with his lawyers filing an appeal at the Court of Appeal on July 28, 2026, challenging the High Court’s decision.
