A suspected armed robber has been arrested at Ejisu after a dramatic attempt to flee with a taxi ended with the vehicle crashing into shops near the Ejisu traffic junction.
The suspect reportedly targeted a Toyota Corolla taxi with registration number GT 1557-16 and allegedly attacked the driver before demanding control of the vehicle.
His escape, however, was quickly disrupted when a group of men at the scene confronted him and attempted to prevent him from driving away.
According to a witness, the suspect responded by reversing the vehicle at speed in an attempt to break through the crowd. The manoeuvre went wrong, causing the car to veer into nearby shops before coming to a stop.
The suspect then abandoned the damaged vehicle and fled on foot as members of the public pursued him.
He eventually sought refuge inside a mobile money container, where he was cornered by the pursuing crowd.
Police officers who arrived at the scene intervened and removed the suspect from the location, preventing the situation from escalating further.
He was subsequently taken into police custody to assist with investigations into the alleged attempted robbery and the circumstances surrounding the crash.
No casualties or injuries have so far been reported in connection with the incident.
Police are expected to investigate the alleged attack on the taxi driver, the attempted theft of the vehicle and the damage caused to the nearby shops.
