The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has confirmed receiving three petitions seeking action over allegations of extortion and related conduct involving Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
The petitions follow allegations made against the Effutu MP by Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi.
In a statement issued on Monday, August 24, the OSP said one of the petitions was jointly filed by two individuals, while two others were submitted separately.
The anti-corruption agency said it had taken note of the allegations circulating publicly and would first assess the petitions to determine whether the issues raised fall within its legal mandate.
The OSP said the assessment would also guide its decision on whether further investigative action should be initiated.
The development adds a new dimension to the growing public dispute between Mr Afenyo-Markin and Mr Gyamfi, which has also featured competing claims over the financial performance of the Ghana Gold Board.
Mr Gyamfi has accused the Minority Leader of extortion, an allegation Mr Afenyo-Markin has rejected. The Minority Leader had earlier indicated that he was considering legal action over the comments.
Dispute linked to GoldBod losses
The allegations have emerged amid a broader disagreement between the two politicians over claims of GH¢22 billion, or about US$1.7 billion, in losses allegedly associated with the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme in 2025.
Mr Afenyo-Markin has been pushing for a parliamentary inquiry into the reported losses, while Mr Gyamfi has maintained that GoldBod did not record the losses being alleged.
The OSP’s decision to assess the petitions could determine whether the extortion allegations warrant further investigation under its statutory mandate.
United Party also seeks investigation
Separately, the United Party has petitioned the Attorney-General and other anti-corruption and security institutions to investigate the allegations against Mr Afenyo-Markin.
The petition was filed by the party’s Communications Director, Solomon Owusu, and Legal Director, Andrew Appiah-Danquah.
The latest petitions place the allegations before multiple state institutions as the public dispute between the Minority Leader and GoldBod CEO continues to attract political and legal attention.
