Ayitey Powers arrested over alleged death threat against NSA boss

Former professional boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, has been arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command over an alleged death threat directed at the Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo.

The 46-year-old former boxer was arrested after a video purportedly showing him making the alleged threat circulated on social media.

In a statement issued on Monday, August 24, 2026, and signed by the Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, Chief Superintendent Juliana Obeng, the Police confirmed that Ayitey Powers was in custody assisting with investigations.

The Police said the arrest was prompted by the circulation of the video and forms part of efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged remarks.

According to the Command, investigations are ongoing to determine whether an offence was committed and the appropriate action to be taken under the law.

The Police have also cautioned the public against circulating unverified claims about the incident as the investigation continues.

The arrest comes after the alleged video attracted attention on social media, with the Police now working to establish the full context and circumstances surrounding the former boxer’s remarks.
