New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary aspirant Eugene Boakye Antwi has attributed part of the party’s poor performance in the 2024 general elections to what he describes as weaknesses in the leadership of incumbent General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong.
Mr Antwi argued that the NPP’s defeat, despite being the governing party at the time and having access to state resources and intelligence, exposed serious shortcomings that needed to be addressed ahead of the 2028 elections.
In a video sighted by GhanaWeb on August 31, 2026, the General Secretary hopeful questioned how the NPP could lose 50 parliamentary seats while it was in government and subsequently end up in opposition.
“You are in power with all resources and intelligence and still lost 50 seats and went into opposition,” he said.
He was particularly critical of Mr Kodua’s tenure as General Secretary, arguing that his performance did not meet the demands of the position and contributed to the party’s electoral setback.
Mr Antwi went as far as questioning the commitment of party members who continue to support the incumbent General Secretary.
“Any NPP member who supports the current General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, does not want the party to return to power because he has performed poorly as General Secretary,” he stated.
His comments come at a time when the NPP is preparing for its internal elections as the party seeks to reorganise its structures, address weaknesses exposed by the 2024 defeat and position itself for a comeback in the 2028 general elections.
The contest for General Secretary is expected to be closely watched as aspirants present their respective visions for rebuilding the party and restoring its electoral fortunes.
