EOCO grants Suame MP John Darko enquiry bail in SIC Savings and Loans Investigation

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has granted Suame Member of Parliament John Darko enquiry bail after he reported to investigators to assist with an ongoing probe into an alleged criminal conspiracy involving SIC Savings and Loans Company Limited.

In a statement dated October 13, 2026, EOCO said Mr Darko honoured its invitation and reported to the Office at exactly 12 noon to provide information relevant to the investigation.

The Office described the MP, who also serves as Legal Counsel to the Minority Caucus, as cooperative throughout the investigative process.

“The Honourable Member was respectful, cooperative and fully responsive throughout the investigative process,” EOCO said.

It added that the decision to grant him enquiry bail was based on the circumstances of the case, the applicable law and his level of cooperation with investigators.

Mr Darko’s appearance follows his earlier disclosure that he had been informed of his possible involvement in the investigation concerning Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah.

Speaking on Saturday, October 3, 2026, he said he was prepared to cooperate with investigators if formally invited.

“I have been told that I’m also involved. I don’t know. And so I will wait until I get an invitation from them. Then I can go and tell whatever I know,” he said.

Mr Darko had previously criticised EOCO’s attempt to arrest Baffour Awuah at the Accra High Court on September 23, 2026, describing the incident as unacceptable and insisting that no state institution should operate above the Constitution.

The investigation centres on alleged unauthorised financial transactions involving SIC Life Savings and Loans Company Limited.

Baffour Awuah, Senior Partner at Sarkodie Baffour Awuah & Partners, was engaged by SIC Life in May 2020 to recover a debt from Equity Savings and Loans Limited.

In July 2024, SIC Life, Equity Savings and Loans, and Eco Swiss Investment Limited entered into Terms of Settlement under which SIC Life agreed to accept GH¢5 million as full and final settlement of a revised judgment debt of GH¢14,850,776.14.

According to the State’s case, Baffour Awuah played a key role in arranging the transaction and subsequently transferred GH¢1 million to the then Managing Director of SIC Life.

He has been charged with conspiracy to commit a crime involving the intentional dissipation of public funds, intentionally causing financial loss to a public body, and money laundering.

He is expected to be arraigned before the High Court’s Specialised Jurisdiction Division.

EOCO said the alleged conspiracy under investigation has resulted in a revised estimated financial loss of approximately GH¢27 million to SIC Savings and Loans Company Limited.

The Office did not disclose the specific allegations against Mr Darko or clarify his alleged role in the matter.

It emphasised that investigations remain ongoing and that no conclusion has been reached regarding the culpability of any person connected to the case.

The grant of enquiry bail does not, in itself, establish wrongdoing by the Suame MP.

EOCO also disclosed that the former Managing Director of SIC Life Savings and Loans, Amma Frimpomaa Dwumah, had honoured its invitation and was cooperating with investigators.

The Office said further developments would depend on the progress of the ongoing investigations.
