Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has cautioned the Attorney General following the conviction and 20-year prison sentence handed to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, July 23, after Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson presented the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review, Afenyo-Markin warned the Attorney General to exercise restraint, insisting that political fortunes can quickly change.
The Effutu MP expressed confidence that the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) would lose the 2028 general elections, arguing that the Attorney General could find himself serving in opposition under a future NPP administration.
According to him, if the current approach continues, an NPP government would not hesitate to pursue legal action against the Attorney General should it return to power.
“Let me serve a warning to the Attorney General that the ravening clouds shall not long be victorious. They shall not long possess the sky. Be careful. In 2028, you’ll be in opposition,” Afenyo-Markin said.
He further claimed that the Attorney General could one day face the same fate as Chairman Wontumi, suggesting that the NPP chairman would regain his freedom while the Attorney General could end up behind bars if political power changes hands.
“If you are not careful, if you don’t stop now, you will go and meet Wontumi there, and he will be out. But you will go in. So I am advising you now: let’s all be measured,” he stated.
Turning his attention to the Mid-Year Budget Review, Afenyo-Markin praised Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson for recognising some of the digitalisation initiatives introduced under the previous NPP administration.
He described the acknowledgment as a positive step and encouraged the Finance Minister to continue building on reforms initiated by the former government.
“We welcome the reforms by the Finance Minister, and for the first time, he has done something patriotic by acknowledging the digitalisation reforms we introduced in government payments. Today, he has acknowledged them.
“We commend you for acknowledging the NPP. We commend you, but you can do better. Tell your government to free all political prisoners. Wontumi deserves justice,” Afenyo-Markin added.
