The government has announced plans to construct 50,000 housing units for teachers across Ghana under a new initiative aimed at improving their living conditions and encouraging more educators to accept postings in underserved communities.
Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu disclosed that the programme, known as the Teacher Dabre Initiative, is intended to address the persistent accommodation challenges faced by teachers, particularly those serving in rural and remote areas.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, July 20, Mr Iddrisu said the project would be implemented through a decentralised approach, with the District Assemblies Common Fund taking the lead in coordinating construction at the regional and district levels.
“We intend to construct 50,000 housing units for teachers all across the country. It is led by the District Assemblies Common Fund in order that we want to decentralise it at the regional and district level,” he said.
The Education Minister explained that the Ministry of Education would complement the initiative by providing the necessary support to facilitate its implementation.
He added that the government plans to leverage resources from the Ghana Secondary School Pension (GSOP) as collateral to help finance the housing programme.
Mr Iddrisu also revealed that the government is close to introducing a 20 per cent incentive allowance for teachers who voluntarily accept postings to rural communities.
“Apart from the 20% allowance for persons who are self-posting into rural areas, we are almost through,” he stated.
According to the Minister, the housing scheme and the proposed rural allowance form part of a broader strategy to enhance teachers’ welfare, improve retention, and make rural postings more attractive while strengthening the quality of education across the country.
