The Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has questioned the rationale behind a Supreme Court application seeking clarity on whether President John Dramani Mahama can contest another presidential election after his current term.
According to Mr. Kwakye Ofosu, the legal action is unnecessary because President Mahama has already made it clear that he has no intention of seeking re-election in 2028.
Speaking on the issue, the Presidential Spokesperson said the President remains committed to serving only the four-year mandate entrusted to him by Ghanaians.
“I don’t even understand Ken Kuranchie’s application. President Mahama has been clear that he has been given a four-year mandate, and he will leave office when the term is due,” he said.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu also stressed that President Mahama’s decision not to seek another term would remain unchanged regardless of the outcome of the Supreme Court case.
“Regardless of the Supreme Court’s decision on Article 66(2), President John Mahama will not contest the 2028 election,” he stated.
His remarks follow an application filed at the Supreme Court by journalist and private legal practitioner Ken Kuranchie, who is seeking an interpretation of Article 66(2) of the 1992 Constitution to determine whether President Mahama is eligible to contest for another term after his current tenure.
The case has generated public discussion over Ghana’s constitutional provisions on presidential term limits, particularly whether a president who has served non-consecutive terms can seek another mandate.
President Mahama returned to office after winning the 2024 presidential election, having previously served as President between 2012 and 2017. His current constitutional term is expected to end in January 2029.
The Supreme Court’s ruling is expected to provide legal clarity on the interpretation of Article 66(2), which limits the number of times a person may be elected President of Ghana. However, the Presidency maintains that the outcome of the case will have no bearing on President Mahama’s political future, as he has already ruled out contesting the 2028 presidential election.
