The Ghana Police Service has reportedly arrested Prince Aboagye, a 38-year-old Branch Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Agona West Constituency of the Central Region, over alleged offensive and defamatory statements made against former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on social media.
A video circulating online shows Mr Aboagye in handcuffs alongside clips in which he allegedly made remarks considered insulting and defamatory against Dr Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
In the video, Mr Aboagye is alleged to have accused Dr Bawumia of serious offences, including murder, theft and having relationships with married women.
He is heard making claims against the former Vice President, saying: “He is a thief and killed his own close associate he used to walk with. He has been sleeping with people’s wives.”
The reported arrest comes days after Ghanaian TikToker Camilla Alhassan was sentenced to one year in prison by the Accra Circuit Court after pleading guilty to charges of offensive conduct and publishing false news.
The court delivered its ruling on July 16, 2026, after Ms Alhassan admitted to sharing videos alleging, without evidence, that President John Dramani Mahama buried 32 cows as part of rituals to secure victory in the 2024 general election.
Her lawyer, Kwadwo Gyamfi Bonsu, explained that the court dismissed the electronic abuse charge, ruling that it lacked jurisdiction to determine that particular offence.
However, the court convicted her on charges of offensive conduct and publishing false news and imposed a one-year custodial sentence.
According to the lawyer, the defence appealed for a reduced sentence, but the court maintained that the growing prevalence of similar offences required a punishment that would serve as a deterrent.
Ms Alhassan’s arrest and prosecution followed the circulation of the controversial videos on social media. During an earlier court hearing, the judge also ordered that she undergo a pregnancy test before sentencing.
