The Bono Regional Police Command has intensified investigations into a suspected fake gold syndicate following the arrest of a 36-year-old man, Gyamfi Christian, in connection with an alleged GH¢1.1 million fraud.
The suspect was arrested on August 17, 2026, at a hideout in Wamfie in the Dormaa East District following intelligence gathered by the Police.
The case came to light after a 29-year-old gold aggregator, Christopher Awuni, reported that four men had allegedly sold him 110 troy ounces of gold for GH¢1.1 million in July.
The gold was later tested and found to be fake, prompting the Police to take custody of the items as exhibits.
According to the Bono Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, Gyamfi Christian admitted his involvement in the transaction during interrogation.
The suspect reportedly told investigators that the deal was concluded at Drobo in the Jaman South Municipality.
“During interrogation, he admitted involvement in the transaction and disclosed that it took place at Drobo in the Jaman South Municipality,” Chief Inspector Akeelah said.
Investigators have since identified three other alleged members of the group as Abraham, popularly known as Frenchman, who is believed to be the leader, Isaac Antwi and Balthazar.
The three suspects are currently on the run, with the Police mounting efforts to locate and arrest them.
Preliminary investigations have also uncovered another alleged case involving the group. Police say the suspects are believed to have defrauded another individual of GH¢1.4 million in a separate transaction at Drobo earlier this year.
The latest development has prompted renewed warnings from the Police over the risks associated with gold transactions, particularly dealings involving unfamiliar individuals or unverified gold.
Chief Inspector Akeelah urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to the Police.
“The Bono Regional Police Command urges the public to exercise caution when engaging in gold transactions and report suspicious activities to the Police,” he said.
Gyamfi Christian remains in Police custody and is assisting investigators as efforts continue to track down his alleged accomplices.
The Police have also appealed to anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspects at large to come forward and assist with the investigation.
