An 87-year-old man, Yaw Gahornu, has been remanded by the Osu District Court over the alleged defilement of a nine-year-old girl at Ofankor in the Greater Accra Region.
Gahornu, who reportedly lives in the same neighbourhood as the victim, is alleged to have sexually abused the child several times between July and August 2026.
According to the facts presented in court, the accused’s wooden sleeping structure is located about 40 metres from the girl’s residence.
The prosecution told the court that Gahornu allegedly lured the child to his sleeping quarters, where the alleged abuse occurred.
The case came to light on August 29, 2026, after the girl’s mother reportedly noticed blood stains on her daughter’s underwear and questioned her.
The child allegedly disclosed that Gahornu had been sexually abusing her and had threatened to kill her if she told anyone about the incidents.
The court further heard that on August 31, the accused was allegedly caught in the act by his granddaughter, Maa Afia, who subsequently informed members of the family.
The girl was later taken to the Ga North Government Hospital for medical examination. According to the prosecution, she was found to be stable but frightened, with injuries and other complications reportedly consistent with the alleged abuse.
Following police investigations, Gahornu was arrested and charged in connection with the case.
The court subsequently remanded him into police custody.
He is expected to reappear before the Osu District Court on October 7, 2026, as investigations continue.
