Police kill suspected armed robber in shootout at Zenu, hunt for three others

The Tema Regional Police Command has confirmed that a suspected armed robber was shot dead during an exchange of gunfire with police officers at Zenu Obaatan in the Greater Accra Region.

The incident, according to Tema Regional Police Commander DCOP Eric Asamoah Asiedu, occurred during an intelligence-led operation targeting a suspected robbery gang. Three other suspects managed to flee the scene with suspected gunshot wounds, while one police officer sustained minor injuries and has since been treated and discharged.

Speaking at a media briefing, DCOP Asiedu said police launched surveillance operations in the area on July 15 and 16, 2026, after receiving intelligence about the activities of the armed suspects.

He explained that officers encountered four armed men in the early hours of July 16, who allegedly opened fire on the police upon spotting them.

“Acting on the information, a police team conducted surveillance operations in the area on 15th and 16th July 2026. In the early hours of 16th July 2026, the team encountered four suspects. The suspects, who were armed, opened fire on the police. The police responded in self-defense,” DCOP Asiedu said.

The Regional Commander stated that one of the suspects sustained fatal injuries during the gun battle and was pronounced dead after being rushed to hospital.

He added that a police officer also suffered minor injuries during the confrontation but received treatment and was later discharged, while the remaining three suspects escaped and are currently being pursued.

“During the exchange, one suspect sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. One police officer also sustained a minor injury and has since been treated and discharged. Three other suspects escaped with injuries,” he stated.

Police recovered weapons and other items from the scene, which have been retained as exhibits to support ongoing investigations. The body of the deceased suspect has been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary for preservation and an autopsy.

DCOP Asiedu further disclosed that all health facilities within the district have been notified to alert the police if anyone reports with gunshot wounds.

“The command has alerted all health facilities within the district to report any persons who seek treatment for gunshot wounds. Investigations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects,” he said.
