Police have arrested two teachers of Obuasi Senior High Technical School over their alleged role in an attack on the school’s headmaster, Abdulai Zakaria.
The suspects, whose names have not been released, are accused of allegedly encouraging some students to assault the headmaster during tensions that erupted on the school’s campus on August 5, 2026.
Obuasi District Police Commander, Superintendent Mahama Iddrisu, said the two teachers are expected to be arraigned as investigations into the incident continue.
According to him, three teachers were initially picked up by the police after the headmaster, who was injured in the attack, was discharged from hospital and reported the matter to the police.
Investigators subsequently took statements from the teachers and compared their accounts with information provided by the headmaster.
Superintendent Iddrisu said the investigations identified two of the teachers as having questions to answer in connection with the alleged assault.
“The headmaster was attacked. He was hospitalised. After he was released, he gave a statement to the police and, in the statement he gave, he mentioned certain names,” he said.
He explained that the headmaster told police that while students carried out the physical attack, some teachers had allegedly encouraged or instigated them.
The police commander said the two teachers were being processed for court, where investigators would seek an order to remand them to enable further investigations.
The incident reportedly followed allegations made by some students against the headmaster, including claims of involvement in ritual activities and inappropriate relationships with female students.
Police, however, stressed that the allegations remain unsubstantiated and are part of the issues being investigated.
Police Investigate Discovery of Foetus on School Grounds
Meanwhile, police are also investigating the discovery of a male foetus that was buried on the school compound and later exhumed by students.
Superintendent Iddrisu said the foetus was recovered on August 5 and has since been deposited at the Obuasi Government Hospital morgue.
He explained that police were awaiting further medical examinations, including a possible DNA test, to establish the identity of the person connected to the burial.
“It is true that a baby boy was buried on the campus of the school, very far from the dormitory. Our information was that the students saw it and then went and exhumed it,” he said.
According to the police commander, some students subsequently linked the burial to the headmaster without providing evidence to support the allegation.
He said the suspicion surrounding the discovery was among the issues that contributed to the unrest and subsequent attack on the headmaster.
“The body of the baby boy has been taken by the police to the Obuasi Government Hospital for preservation and maybe we will do a post-mortem examination and, if possible, a DNA test to know exactly who brought it,” Superintendent Iddrisu added.
Police are continuing investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the burial, determine who was responsible and ascertain whether there is any connection between the incident and the allegations made against the headmaster.
The headmaster, who suffered machete wounds during the attack, has since been discharged from hospital.
