The Tema Regional Police Command has revealed that its officers turned down an alleged GH¢150,000 bribe from a suspect who reportedly attempted to secure the release of a truck carrying thousands of parcels of suspected narcotic substances.
The attempted bribery was disclosed by the Tema Regional Police Commander, DCOP Eric Asamoah Asiedu, during a press briefing on Thursday, July 23, where he provided updates on the command’s recent anti-crime operations.
According to DCOP Asiedu, the truck was intercepted at Afienya during an intelligence-led operation that resulted in the arrest of two suspects. The suspects have since been remanded into custody pending further investigations.
He explained that after the arrests, one of the suspects allegedly offered police officers GH¢150,000 in an effort to have the truck and its suspected narcotic cargo released.
“Our officers rejected an alleged GH¢150,000 bribe offered by a suspect who sought the release of the truck carrying the suspected narcotic substances,” DCOP Asiedu stated.
The Regional Commander praised the officers for refusing the alleged inducement, describing their conduct as a demonstration of the Ghana Police Service’s commitment to professionalism, integrity and the rule of law.
He reaffirmed the command’s determination to intensify the fight against organised crime, stressing that criminals would find no safe haven within the Tema Region.
“The Tema Regional Police Command remains resolute, vigilant and fully committed to combating crime. We have strengthened intelligence gathering, patrols and collaboration with other security agencies. There will be no haven for criminals within this region,” he said.
Police said the truck, which was carrying 5,039 compressed parcels of suspected narcotic substances, remains in their custody while investigations continue.
The Command added that efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest other individuals believed to be linked to the suspected drug trafficking network.
The announcement formed part of a wider briefing on the Tema Regional Police Command’s sustained operations targeting armed robbery, narcotics trafficking and other forms of organised crime.
