A former Vice President of the Association of Students of English (ASSENS) at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Mercy Yaaba Bredu, has died in China, barely two days after leaving Ghana to pursue further opportunities abroad.
Mercy, who was reportedly a first-class student during her time at UEW, travelled to China on Monday, August 24, 2026, with hopes of continuing her education and exploring opportunities in the country.
She was reportedly seen off at the Accra International Airport by family members and friends before boarding her flight, which departed at about 1:30 p.m.
However, the journey reportedly took a tragic turn when Mercy complained of heart pain while travelling.
According to a report by MyJoyOnline.com published on August 26, she collapsed shortly after arriving at an airport in China while receiving a bouquet of flowers.
She was immediately taken to a hospital for treatment, but doctors were unable to save her.
Mercy passed away on Wednesday, August 26, just two days after departing Ghana.
News of her death has triggered an outpouring of grief among her family, friends, former colleagues and members of the ASSENS community, who have been left stunned by the sudden loss.
Her death has also cast a shadow over what was expected to be the beginning of a new chapter in her academic and personal journey in China.
