The family of a 31-year-old woman who died after undergoing a Caesarean section at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, popularly known as Ridge Hospital, is demanding answers over the circumstances surrounding her death.
The woman, identified as Theresa Boakye Dua, died on July 16, 2026, following what her husband, Daniel Ofori Asante, described as a traumatic experience at the hospital.
In a Facebook post on Friday, August 28, Mr Asante accused the hospital and some of its medical personnel of negligence and unprofessional conduct.
He said Theresa had gone to Ridge Hospital for a scheduled elective Caesarean section, which was her first childbirth experience.
According to him, the couple had trusted the facility to safely deliver their first child, but the procedure instead resulted in the death of his wife and left their newborn son without his mother.
“Theresa’s only fault was being pregnant and placing her trust in Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge Hospital) for a scheduled, elective Caesarean section,” he wrote.
Mr Asante alleged that “blatant negligence and unprofessionalism” contributed to Theresa’s death but did not provide details of the specific medical decisions or actions he believes resulted in the tragedy.
He said he had struggled to come to terms with the events since the night of July 16.
“Since the evening of July 16, 2026, I have lived in excruciating pain. I am still struggling to process the horrific ordeal my wife, our families and myself endured at Ridge Hospital,” he said.
The bereaved husband said the loss had robbed their son of the opportunity to experience the care and affection of his mother.
“Our baby boy has been robbed of the unconditional love of a devoted mother,” he wrote.
He also described the impact of Theresa’s death on her parents, particularly because she was their only child.
“Every morning, I look at my mother-in-law and wonder how any mother survives the agony of losing her only child in the very act of bringing new life into this world,” he wrote.
Mr Asante further disclosed that Theresa’s father, who was living outside Ghana and had not planned to return until 2027, was forced to travel back following his daughter’s death.
He described picking his father-in-law up from the airport as one of the most painful experiences he had endured.
The death has also reportedly affected Theresa’s colleagues at the Ministry of Health, members of the ICGC Covenant Temple, as well as relatives and friends.
Remembering his wife as a calm and gentle person, Mr Asante alleged that decisions taken by certain individuals at Ridge Hospital contributed to the loss of her life.
“Theresa was a gentle, peaceful, and unproblematic soul, yet reckless decisions made by some people at Ridge Hospital ensured her life was cut short,” he alleged.
The family, he said, continues to grapple with the emotional and psychological consequences of the death, which he described as an “irreparable” loss.
The allegations have brought renewed attention to the circumstances surrounding Theresa’s death, although the specific medical events leading to her passing have not been publicly established.
