Former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko has formally entered the race for the National Chairmanship of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), promising to overhaul the party’s structures and strengthen its chances of returning to power in 2028.
Mr Agyarko submitted his nomination forms and said his decision to contest was driven by the need to rebuild the party following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.
According to him, the NPP’s electoral setback was not primarily the result of the performance or quality of its presidential candidate, but rather the inability of the party’s structures at the time to provide the necessary support.
“In the 2024 election, the NPP had a strong candidate but the party was weak, and therefore the party couldn’t carry him across the finish line,” he said.
Mr Agyarko pledged to focus on strengthening the party from the grassroots to the national level if elected National Chairman.
He said his priority would be to transform the NPP into a more effective and competitive electoral organisation capable of winning the 2028 elections.
“I will do everything possible to bring Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to power in 2028. I do this for the party I love, for the party I have served since 1992,” he stated.
‘NPP shall rise again’
Mr Agyarko assured party members that the NPP could recover from its current political setback and return to government.
He said the party would need renewed commitment, stronger organisation and a coordinated strategy to regain the confidence of voters ahead of the next general election.
“Let me assure the entire party that the NPP shall rise again. We shall rise with willpower and make Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia President of the Republic and secure a majority in Parliament,” he declared.
The former Energy Minister appealed to delegates to support his bid, promising to rebrand and reorganise the party’s structures, particularly at the grassroots.
He said the rebuilding process would extend from polling stations and constituencies through to the national leadership.
“The party may have gone down after the 2024 elections, but we are not out. The NPP shall rise again,” he added.
Mr Agyarko is seeking the mandate of NPP delegates to lead the party as it prepares for the 2028 general elections, with a pledge to strengthen its organisation and position it for an electoral comeback.
