Builsa North MP James Agalga has officially assumed the position of Majority Leader in Parliament, promising to prioritise dialogue and consensus in his dealings with the Minority Caucus.
Mr Agalga’s elevation follows a decision by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to reorganise its Parliamentary Caucus leadership after former Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga was nominated as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
The change was formally communicated to Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, paving the way for Mr Agalga to take charge of the Majority Caucus.
In his first remarks in his new role, Mr Agalga signalled his intention to foster greater cooperation between the Majority and Minority sides of the House.
He said while he remained committed to advancing the government’s legislative agenda, he would also engage the Minority on issues that required consultation and compromise.
Addressing Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin and other Minority MPs, Mr Agalga said he was prepared to reach across the aisle whenever necessary to ensure Parliament effectively carried out its legislative and oversight duties.
“We can make compromises as and when necessary. And I assure you, I’ll give it to you. I would reach out, I would consult, but at the same time, I would work to ensure that the Reset Agenda of our President is accomplished for the betterment of all of us,” he said.
Mr Agalga’s appointment places him at the helm of the Majority Caucus at a time when Parliament is expected to balance the government’s policy priorities with its constitutional responsibilities of scrutiny and oversight.
His pledge for cooperation is expected to shape his approach to negotiations and legislative business between the two sides of the House.
